Somebody once mentioned McDonalds when I was talking about how I was always looking for the perfect burger. I had to refrain from slapping them. A properly grilled and constructed hamburger is a thing of beauty. The meat must be grilled to perfection. The buns must compliment and support the entire creation. And the condiments and toppings must enhance the flavor of the burger, not take center stage themselves.

Traditional Burgers

There's something to be said for the basic down to earth taste of a backyard grill cooked burger slapped on a toasted bun, topped with some freshly sliced tomatoes and squirted with bit of ketchup and mustard.

Gourmet/Specialty Burgers

There is a fine line between a gourmet/specialty burgers and a fruffy pile of pretentious something. Sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, secret sauces and even a fried egg are ok additions to a burger. But too much fluff can defeat the purpose of a burger; which is a great chunk of perfectly cooked beef on a hearty bun!

Ok, "world" may be an exageration. Ever since moving to Europe, I have been on a quest to find the perfect burger. Perfect burgers are pretty easy to find in the US, it's basically our national food. But Europe, including Romania for sure, are a bit lacking when it comes to burger knowledge. Thing are rapidly improving in this area though and burgers have become quite the in trend in Romania as of late.
